Faulty Reasoning is a Slippery Slope Or: how to recognize rhetorical fallacies

Welcome to the era of fake news, faulty reasoning and verbal silliness.  This workshop will help you recognize some of the most frequent rhetorical fallacies so you can identify and defuse them.

This workshop is the best thing that will ever happen to you in your entire life. It’s like that time when your second grade teacher gave you a top mark and you knew you didn’t deserve it. If you miss this opportunity, you will be fired from your job. If you don’t believe me, just try it.  Or ask my cousin Tom; he is a famous blogger, with thousands of followers.

Confused?  Good. I just threw a bucketful of faulty reasoning at you. Did any of it stick? Of course not, you recognize ad absurdum and other faulty arguments when you see them.  But not all faulty reasoning is so easy to detect. This workshop is a journey into the well-charted, but relatively unknown world of RHETORICAL FALLACY.

As with any rhetorical figure, you can avoid them, use them—if you’re sneaky, or at least recognize them in your debating adversaries and point out the weaknesses in their arguments. That’s important stuff at GOW, so you can win the debate–and fundamental for your persuasive speaking in TM, at work, and even in relationships.

The workshop will combine a little bit of theory with some lively group experimentation. You’ll get a competitive edge for the debate …. Alongside everyone else in attendance! The best debaters will be those who can immediately put these notions to work at the GOW debates.

The workshop is designed for experienced Toastmasters, but guests and newbies will find plenty of usable notions as well.  Advanced speakers will get structure and a deeper knowledge of skills they might already be using.

Lisa Marie Gelhaus is the founder of WordWorks – the American School of Public Speaking.  She holds degrees in Political Science and Communication Arts (specialty in Rhetoric, most of which she applies, but can’t remember why) from the University of Wisconsin Madison, USA.

She arrived in Bologna Italy more than 30 years ago and fell immediately in love with Italy and especially Bologna. She has worked in companies (marketing and public relations), communications agencies (event management, PR, online marketing), she directed a Cultural Association and has been a freelance communications consultant and corporate trainer since 2004. WordWorks is her life project and start-up company that teaches Italian international companies oral communications and persuasion offline — and coming soon— online.

Lisa has one daughter, one grandson and two naughty cats. She loves to sing American music with her Trio Honey & Red Wine and sings at jazz jam sessions when they don’t kick her off the stage.

Lisa in Toastmasters

Lisa is the VPPR of Toastmasters Two Towers in Bologna. She’s been an active and enthusiastic Toastmaster since November 2018. She will conclude her Presentation Mastery Pathway on December 12th. She loves the contests in Toastmasters:  last spring she placed 1st in Evaluation and 2nd in Table Topics at the Division A Conference. The District Conference didn’t go so well – so what!?

This year, even though she’s torn between competing and pursuing DTM, she’s decided to give top priority to International Speech competition, with her eye set on Paris!  In the meantime she’ll be behind-the-scenes in the organization of this year’s Division A Conference which will be held in Bologna on April 17th-18th-19th, 2020: home turf!
